The Presbyterian Church at Hammonton.

What does it mean to be Presbyterian

The Presbyterian Church is part of the Reformed tradition of Christianity. We trace our roots back to the 16th century, rooted in the teachings of the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage and most of our beliefs began from the writings of the French lawyer, John Calvin. Some of his principles are still at our core. Our beliefs are that our accomplishments come from God's gifts that were given to us. Jesus is Lord, the son of God, and the Savior of the world. Presbyterians believe that Jesus Christ is the head of the Church and that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, providing guidance for our faith and daily lives.

We are called to worship God, grow as disciples of Jesus Christ, care for one another, and serve our neighbors with compassion, humility, and love, no matter who they are or what their background is. The church's duty is to show God's love and grace in places that are suffering and in need, and to support places that focus on restoring all of God's people and children.
Our tradition values thoughtful faith, encouraging people to ask questions, learn together, and deepen their relationship with God. We believe faith grows through worship, prayer, Scripture, Christian education, fellowship, and service.

How we operate

One of the unique characteristics of the Presbyterian Church is our shared leadership. Our congregation is led by a pastor together with elected elders and deacons.
Pastors provide spiritual leadership, preach the Gospel, teach God's Word, administer the Sacraments, and care for the congregation.
Elders are elected by the congregation to provide spiritual guidance, make decisions, and help lead the mission and ministry of the church.
Deacons lead ministries of compassion, care, service, and outreach, responding to the practical needs of individuals and the community.

As Scripture reminds us:
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." — Colossians 3:12
"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." — Galatians 6:2
Our doors—and our hearts—are always open. We are here to listen, to encourage, and to walk alongside you with the love and compassion of Christ.
